Legislation Governing EV Stickers on Number Plates

• State: Victoria, Australia

• Specific Legislation: Schedule 1 of the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 2021, Clause 144B

• Applies to: Electric-powered vehicles and vehicles modified to be electric-powered (excluding hydrogen-powered vehicles)

  • Fix a blue, reflective, metal "EV" sticker to both front and rear number plates

  • Sticker must be a 30mm equilateral triangle

  • Letters must be white, capital, and at least 8mm high

  • Sticker must not obscure any characters on the number plate

• Offence: Using a vehicle on a highway that does not comply with registration standards (RS(V)R 294(1))

• Fine: $769 (as of December 2023)

Additional Notes

• The legislation came into effect in January 2019.

• The requirement for EV stickers applies to vehicles manufactured or modified after January 1, 2019.

• The primary purpose of the stickers is to alert emergency services personnel to the presence of high-voltage electrical systems in the event of an accident.

• While not yet mandated in all Australian states and territories, it's recommended to display EV stickers regardless of local regulations for safety purposes.
